FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What type of clothing, headwear, and gloves should I bring?
 | People tend to neglect accessories like hats and gloves, but when snowshoeing these things are necessities. If the wind picks up, starting from your neck and head, your body temperature begins to drop little by little. Wearing a hat is a good protection against this. Your ears especially lose heat quickly, and if exposed directly to winter wind, may suffer mild to acute frostbite. Please choose a hat that covers your ears.
People particularly sensitive to the cold should also consider a scarf or other neck covering. If you are unsure, we recommend bringing a neck covering anyway – if you get too warm you can always take off the extra layers.
As for gloves, ski or snowboard gloves should be sufficient. In the case that you do not have gloves suited for activities in the snow, cotton gloves are not a replacement. Cotton gloves don’t provide much protection against wind, and also get wet easily, so there’s not much difference between wearing them and wearing nothing at all! |
Your fingertips and toes are also vulnerable to frostbite if not properly protected. To protect them and stay warm, please pick wool or fleece wear. Ski or snowboard gloves are really the best protection against frostbite.
Cotton socks also pose the same problems as cotton gloves, so please don’t wear them! The inside of your boots can get stuffy, and cotton gets wet easily. Wool or chemical fiber are much better options.
