FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are snowshoes like?

So, what are these snowshoes we’ve heard so much about recently? They are tools to help us walk and play in the snow! After connecting them to the bottom of your shoes, they work almost like a regular shoe. The modern version acts a like really big sandal, and because of its relatively larger area, pushes down more fluffy snow than regular footwear would. This allows you to walk without sinking deep into the snow. Even if you are wearing snowshoes though, you do sink a certain degree.

Snowshoes have been around since ancient times, and in Japan this took the form of Kanjiki, which were used by traditional Japanese people to navigate the snow. However, modern snowshoes have changed in favor of a movable heal, which makes climbing steep slopes considerably easier.

Also, because snowshoes are designed to attach to the bottom of your feet, having suitable boots that fit well are very important. If you don’t wear waterproof rubber boots, you might get very cold!
