What are stocks for?

It is seems like there are many people who think that ski poles, or ’stocks,’ are only used for skiing. But they are also very important for snowshoeing. If you do not use stocks, the wear on your body is significantly more noticeable.

When snowshoeing you usually walk on top of the snow, so sometimes the surface can be a unstable. If you don’t use stocks, this causes your body to sway back and forth unnecessarily, which causes you to become tired quickly. Stocks naturally stabilize your body’s movement and balance. If there is less right to left movement, you are also less likely to fall and injure yourself.

It is also common for people to think that your arms will get tired if you use stocks. Please remember that there will also be times where you will rest your arms on the stocks themselves. While you are walking with snowshoes this happens very naturally, and so your arms do not get tired. Occasionally, there might be times when guides will not carry stocks so that their hands are free to help customers or take pictures, but to have a fun and relaxing time snowshoeing, stocks are very important!
