FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What kind of boots should I wear?

Snowshoes attach directly to the bottom of your boots.

Even if you walk in the snow with your current shoes, if you don’t bring adequate boots you might be unable to walk with snowshoes.

So, what kind of boot is suited for snowshoe trekking?

First of all, they should be waterproof. Walking through the snow can be very uncomfortable if your feet become wet. Although nice, it is not absolutely necessary to have Gore-tex quality material, which completely seals out every drop of water. Regular rubber boots that don’t have holes that let in water should be fine. The kind of gear you should consider is probably the kind of thing you would associate with skiwear.

Another thing to consider is protection against the cold. However much the shoes protect against the water, if you wear plain rubber boots, your toes will undoubtedly get very cold. If you walk around your core body temperature might get warmer, but extremities like your toes will probably not get much warmer if you wear regular rubber boots. Please pick boots with fleece or fur lining.

For mountain climbing on a snowy peak, Gore-Tex might be more appropriate, but for snowshoe trekking, it is not so necessary. The kind of warm and soft shoe you could find a Home Center (ホームセンター) should be sufficient.

Please choose a shoe that is high cut and covers the ankle. If the boot is warm and protects your toes, then it should be perfect for snowshoeing
